Hebden Bridge Chiropractic » FAQ

What is a chiropractor?

Chiropractors locate, correct spinal and other joint misalignments, usually by adjusting the spine. This helps to restore the body’s own healing ability allowing it to function better.
Chiropractors at Hebden Bridge Chiropractic also take a keen interest in your diet, lifestyle, stress levels, and exercise. You may be given advice in these areas.

What is the difference between a chiropractor and an osteopath?

Both Chiropractic and Osteopathy originated in America in the 1890’s. Both have similar educational requirements with 4-year full time course leading to a BSc. Both professions have statutory registration (General chiropractic council). However there are differences in the method of assessment and treatment. Chiropractors tend to be more location specific, whereas Osteopaths put more focus on soft tissue work. Chiropractors are trained to take and interpret X-Rays.

Are you registered?

Yes all chiropractors at Hebden Bridge Chiropractic are registered with the General Chiropractic Council and are members of the British Chiropractic Association.

Do I need to be referred by a Doctor?

No. Chiropractors are Primary Health-Care practitioners, like Dentists and Opticians. Those with health care insurance that covers chiropractic may need a GP referral but this depends on your policy, please check with your insurance company.

What will happen during my first appointment?

At Hebden Bridge Chiropractic your first appointment will take between 45 minutes and one hour (other clinics may take less time over this important visit). A full medical history will be taken, and questions will be asked about your complaint and any previous history of problems. After this a thorough examination will take place including orthopaedic and neurological tests. This may require you to undress and a gown will be provided for you to wear. Some patients may wish to bring shorts.
After this the chiropractor will explain your diagnosis in a report of findings, and will explain whether chiropractic is suitable for you, a plan of management and an estimate as to how many treatments over what period of time.
You may also be given exercises and advice on diet or lifestyle.

How long does an appointment take?

Your initial visit will take between 45 minutes and 1 hour. Follow up appointments take around 15 minutes.

What is an adjustment?

The chiropractor uses a carefully directed and controlled pressure in a precise direction to a joint that is not moving properly, to allow the body to begin the healing process.

How is an adjustment given?

Various ways. The chiropractor may use their hands to adjust the joints of the spine or elsewhere they may also use wedge shaped blocks or slow stretching movements

What is the popping sound?

This is the same as when a knuckle cracks. It indicates that the joint has separated slightly and released normal fluids and gas from the joint. You may receive an adjustment without hearing the popping sound.

Does an adjustment hurt?

Adjustments rarely hurt but may be uncomfortable depending on the area and the reason for adjustment. Some people will experience monor discomfort following treatment such as muscle stiffness, headache or feeliong tired. This is normal and should settle down within 24 hours.

How many treatments will I need?

This can vary from case to case. It can depend upon your complaint, the severity of it, your diet, your lifestyle and levels of stress which all play a role. At your first visit to Hebden Bridge Chiropractic your chiropractor will discuss your condition with you and will be able to give you a good idea of how many treatments you will need. The frequency of your visits is reduced as your body responds to improved spinal function.
Healing takes time and varies from person to person.

Do I have to keep coming back forever?

No. There are three phases to your care. Pain relief, corrective care and maintenance care. Pain relief is usually achieved relatively quickly depending on your condition. However correcting the cause of the problem takes longer. You have the option of discontinuing your care when the pain subsides, when you complete the corrective procedure or you can continue with maintenance is. Maintenance care is designed to keep your spine healthy and reduce the chance of recurrences of problems. Just as you would go to the dentist for a check-up. We are looking to resolve spinal restrictions before you feel the symptoms.
How long you chose to receive chiropractic care is always up to you

Will I need X-Rays or MRI?

No not unless the chiropractor deems this necessary then you will be referred to a suitable institution where these can be taken. The chiropractor will then explain the results to you.
